In Australia, every qualified fitness professional should register with Fitness Australia. Fitness Australia is a peak industry body for the fitness industry in Australia. A key role of Fitness Australia is to promote the industry, set standards of practice in consultation within the industry, represent the industry amongst key stakeholder groups and lobby on issues affecting members, fitness professionals and the fitness industry. They are also committed to promoting the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle to all Australians. Fitness Australia is a not-for-profit, membership-based association that was incorporated in 2002.
Registration with Fitness Australia provides you with public recognition that you are a professional in your field, and it also provides you with access to insurance, which is critical to have when you are working with people and their health and physical fitness.
Registration occurs in two-year blocks. In order to be eligible to re-register at the end of every two years, you need to have accumulated 18 Continuing Education Credits (CECs). CECs can be earned in numerous ways, such as attending conventions (e.g., FILEX) or completing fitness instructor training courses (e.g., Pilates or Indoor Cycling). Of course, the great news is that your Network membership lets you earn up to 12 CECs in any two-year period, through:
- Having membership with a professional association (1 CEC per year)
- Receiving and reading the Network publications (1 CEC per year)
- Successfully completing CEC exams (one exam appears in every issue of the quarterly Network magazine = 4 CECs per year).
