When group exercise stands the test of time...
by Analee Matthews | Tuesday, February 10, 2009
Network: Marietta Mehanni. You have made such an enormous contribution to the Australian fitness industry over the years. Can you shed some light on what you've done during your fitness career?
MM: The question could be what haven't I done? My first passion is teaching group fitness, which I still do 19 classes in different formats including aqua per week. I have coordinated group fitness programs, did a little bit of personal training, taught school groups, trained and choreographed for school aerobic teams, competed in Funk competitions, choreographed and performed in fund raising events, modelled for clothing companies and have participated the 'shopping centre' performances. I have also presented in 7 countries and still do so as well as train group fitness and aqua instructors, lecture for Cert III and IV in fitness, mentor several group fitness and aqua instructors and presenters per week and develop and write courses for group fitness, coordinators, presenters and Gymstick. I also write fitness related articles, and do TV, radio and newspaper interviews. ...read more

Can exercise raise the risk of developing pre-eclampsia?
by Analee Matthews | Wednesday, January 21, 2009
Can exercise raise the risk of developing pre-eclampsia?
Pre-eclampsia is an increase in blood pressure (compared to pre-pregnancy levels) and high levels of protein in the urine, usually occurring in the 2nd half of the pregnancy. While mild pre-eclampsia can be managed, if the pre-eclampsia is severe, the only way to cure it is to deliver the baby, which of course can be very risky for mother and baby depending on how early delivery is. ...read more

The results of Network's first ever Group Fitness Instructor Survey are here!
by Ryan Hogan | Monday, December 15, 2008
Lesser variety of programs, smaller and fewer classes seems to be the name of the game in the current Group Exercise world. In the recent Group Exercise Instructor survey completed by Network it seems that the current scenario for practicing instructors is that less is better! This is perhaps not surprising, as the variety of possible classes you can teach has never been greater and the understanding one must have to teach effectively and professionally has also never been higher. ...read more

New Research on Sugar Addiction
by Ryan Hogan | Wednesday, December 10, 2008
The following post is authored by Networks head online trainer Alisha Smith: We’ve all suffered from the 3pm energy slump and all too often find ourselves feeling unable to resist the temptation of a chocolate bar (or two) to make it through the rest of the day. The missing Fitness link: POSTURE!
by Ryan Hogan | Monday, December 01, 2008
Picture this; a beautiful girl decked out in designer clothes with perfect makeup and hair – but something is wrong. Her head pokes forward, her shoulders round over and there is a slight hump on her upper back – and this is when she is sitting down. It gets worse. She stands up in her patent heels and her backside sticks right out and the arch in her lower back looks very uncomfortable. You’ve seen this girl before at the gym and working with a personal trainer on the weights floor, but all of her efforts have not addressed a very important factor of fitness: posture. ...read more
