The FILEX 2010 Business Summit rocked it!

by Analee Matthews | Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Just finished a great day at the FILEX 2010 Business Summit down at Pyrmont - fantastic location for an amazing day of speakers. Loads of diverse content delivered by people from outside the industry as well from within it, which made for interesting listening.

Mark McCrindle (of the McCrindle Research, the market research company) gave us some good stats on the markets we should be targeting and the values that appeal to them (and which we may not be displaying). After a flat white we all got our tech heads on as Suzi Dafnis gave us some practical tips on using social media. There have been plenty of social media sessions in recent years, but Suzi still managed to tell us plenty we didn't know; I guess that's the beauty of technology - moving so fast there's always something new to learn (and FILEX is a great place to learn about it).

Have you ever seen Terry Hawkins present? She's like a force of nature up there on the stage, and after a delicious lunch in the sunshine she was what we all needed to keep us from taking a post-lunch nap. Terry is all about communication, and communicate she did. Loads of laughs to be had too, and some pertinent advice about getting our own messages across and getting the best out of people; her one major rule to success in business. Ask people what they want and give it to them. Seems simple, but I'm sure we all know plenty of businesses which don't adhere to it.

All the way from Florida, one of the industry's great success stories, Joe Cirulli, gave us a cracking insight into the accountability system that he has used to build a highly successful chain of gyms. Interesting to see all the ears in the audience prick up and the flurry of hands scribbling away taking notes.

Another coffee (and perhaps a few calorific pastries) and we were ready for the finale and Wayne Goldsmith telling us how to lead without leading. Not possible I hear you cry. Well apparently it is, and Wayne had an interesting take on how and why.

All up, a great day and brilliant to catch up with some familiar faces and meet lots of new ones too. Superb start to what's destined to be a fantastic FILEX weekend. Til tomorrow - goodnight!
