Controversies of the core

by Analee Matthews | Friday, April 15, 2011

By freelance editor Helen Jones

Professor Paul Hodges presented on the many controversies of the core on the first day of FILEX 2011. Core stability has been discussed at length, and in some ways the debate is getting quite heated, so he looked into how we might be able to resolve some of these controversies.

“Back pain is a huge problem in modern life, so we need to help people to move better and more freely.” There is a clinical assumption that exercise should aim to increase the stability of the spine, and exercise interventions have been around for 100 years.   ...read more

What happens in the 23hrs a day that clients are NOT exercising?

by Oliver Kitchingman | Friday, April 08, 2011

This post is written by Alisha Smith, Australian Fitness Network’s Education Manager. Alisha is also a personal trainer and a group exercise instructor based in Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Consumers are constantly being bombarded with products that purport to help track energy expenditure and intake, record heart rate, predict V02max, calculate kilometres run, strides per minute, elevation climbed and a whole host of other fancy sounding scientific things. As a personal trainer, I’m usually hesitant to recommend anything beyond a good ol’ fashioned heart rate monitor – unless a client is particularly interested in the greater detail for the purpose of trekking/marathon/triathlon training. And while there are a wide range of monitors on the market that cater for this group, I’ve never really found a product that can provide the type of details that fat reduction clients are more interested in – namely, what’s happening for the 23hrs a day that they’re typically NOT exercising?   ...read more

by Jack Lee | Thursday, February 18, 2010

In response to Siobhan Moylan’s article that appeared online on 1 February, criticising the fitness industry’s 8-week qualification courses, Vicki Tuchtan writes this:

My hand is up high and proud Siobhan Moylan, as I am a fitness guru.
And as such, I feel compelled to respond to your recent article surrounding the training of fitness professionals in Australia (Hands up if you’re a fitness guru, 1/2/10). Before we get to that, let me indulge with a brief history of the training system in Australia.  ...read more

Aerobic exercise ‘a waste of time’ SHOCK HORROR

by Alisha Smith | Wednesday, February 10, 2010

“Aerobic exercise ‘a waste of time’”- I can’t begin to reveal the level of frustration I felt when I read this headline on a news.com.au article this week. The article was referencing a study done in the UK about the effect that genes have on the results obtained by exercising.
In this case, my issue isn’t with the story itself, which is reporting on the findings of a genuine study. The problem is the deliberately misleading headline.  ...read more

Love it or otherwise, we can use The Biggest Loser to boost our Fitness Businesses

by Analee Matthews | Tuesday, February 02, 2010

It's back on our boxes. And love it or hate it The Biggest Loser TV show has a potentially massive impact on our industry!

In past blogs, we've discussed whether the show is a pro or con for the industry, and whether it's offensive or helpful, but these ongoing debates aside, the bottom line is that there really is a great opportunity for PTs, clubs and group exercise instructors alike to tap into the heightened interest that the show creates, and really boost our business activities.   ...read more

by Ryan Hogan | Tuesday, December 29, 2009

The following post is written by Network's Online Trainer Skye Jones.

Before I get my ‘intellectual’ cap on, let me just preface this blog post by saying that I have followed two career paths in my life – one being an artist and visual arts educator with my specific focus being community arts projects, and the other being a fitness professional. I am a personal trainer and a group exercise instructor.  ...read more
