// Ditch the razor and mo-tivate your clients!

The gym is the perfect environment in which to raise awareness of the men's health issues of prostate cancer and male depression. It's time to get your Mo on, says Kate Selth.

Men have a one in five risk of developing prostate cancer by the age of 85, and each year in Australia close to 3,300 men will die. Moreover, one in eight men will experience depression in their lifetime. Although these issues may be no laughing matter, there's no reason why raising awareness of them shouldn't also raise a smile. And that's where Movember comes in.

Since it was founded in 2003, The Movember Foundation has been dedicated to bringing these issues to light and in doing so, having a lasting impact on the face of men's health. Each Movember (the month between October and December!) men around the world start the month clean-shaven before proceeding to primp and preen their inner bohemian for the next 30 days –

while getting sponsored to do so. Funds raised are donated to Movember's health partners, Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) and beyondblue – the national depression initiative, to fund a broad range of innovative research, education, support and awareness programs.

Movember is not just for men (the 'Mo Bros'); the support of the 'Mo Sista' community is invaluable in making the month a success. Whether it's getting on board as a Team Captain to recruit Mo Bros and fellow Mo Sistas, or supporting their Mo Bro as they grow their moustache for the month, it all counts.

Last year 130,000 Australian Mo Bros and Sistas helped raise a global total of $72 million. A percentage of these funds enabled the PCFA to launch an Australian first initiative – a free 'patient pack' for men looking for guidance following diagnosis of prostate cancer. The patient pack is the first stage in a long-term program to improve awareness of prostate cancer support groups and to make information more accessible for men who are diagnosed.

This year, Movember plans to move from successful to significant – and you and your clients can help make this happen. A celebration of health, fitness and general wellbeing, Movember provides a chance to generate some friendly competition in the gym, studio or boot camp. Although you can register individually, growing a moustache is something that some people prefer to do as part of a group, as they feel more confident about their new upper lip companion... It's this team dynamic that produces the camaraderie that has made Movember so popular within these spaces. Above all, it's a chance to have a little fun with clients, members and colleagues while making a difference.

A PT's story: Jonno Hook, NSW

Mo Bros Jonno Hook and Network editor Oliver Kitchingman
"As a PT, keeping your business energy fresh for long term clients can be tricky. I like to get involved with charitable challenges and fundraising events like Movember that create some buzz and also add variety and fun to clients' sessions. The added bonus for my business is that my relationships with clients are strengthened as a result.

Last year I set a goal of raising $200 for Movember and promised all my clients that I would keep my Mo' until Christmas if the amount was reached before month end. I thought it was an optimistic goal, but I cracked it by day 10 and went on to exceed my fundraising targets. It seemed I underestimated both the generosity of my clients and their desire to see me stuck with my attempt at a moustache for an extra month!

Movember is a great event to get involved in, and I look forward to signing up again this year – only this time I plan to set my goal a little higher and encourage some clients to join me in my efforts!"
