It is frequently suggested that prolonged sitting is detrimental to our health. Long periods spent sitting on a regular basis can lead to health issues such as heart disease and diabetes, and can also increase the risk of premature death. A new study published by the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology proposes some minor changes that can reduce the health risks associated with prolonged sitting.

The American Heart Association recommends that 150 minutes a week of moderate intensity exercise or 75 minutes a week of vigorous exercise is needed to maintain good health and reduce the risks related to lengthy periods spent behind a desk. However, long work hours and busy lives may render this unachievable for many people. Instead, the study focused on more feasible ways to offset the risks of prolonged sitting and found that a simple two minute walk every hour could make a difference.

Srinivasan Beddhu, professor of internal medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine and lead author of the study explained that ‘even short periods of light activity add up to a lot when repeated over the course of a week’. The research found that taking a casual two minute walk or doing some light cleaning could reduce the risk of premature death by 33%.

Based on the results of the study professor Beddhu recommended adding two minutes of walking each hour in combination with two and a half hours of moderate exercise each week. He further explained that moderate exercise is advantageous for heart and muscle strengthening, benefits that may not be associated with light exercise.
