Mussels for muscles

A recent study has added ballast to the link between marine oil supplements and muscle repair following exercise.

Research led by professor Timothy Mickleborough from Indiana University in the US found that taking a pre-workout supplement of the omega-3 PCSO-524, a marine oil lipid derived from the New Zealand green-lipped mussel, significantly reduces the effects of muscle damage.

For the study, which was funded by a supplement producer, 32 males who were not highly trained (and would therefore elicit a greater muscle response than a highly trained athlete who is used to regular muscle damage) were given either the mussel supplement or a placebo for 26 days, both before a muscle-damaging exercise session and for 96 hours afterwards.

The study subjects who were given the supplement exhibited less muscle soreness, pain, loss of strength and fatigue and had less inflammatory proteins evident in their blood. In other words, they had less bodily stress post-workout than those who didn’t take the supplement.

Mickleborough commented: ‘It might have positive implications for triathletes if they're doing several different types of exercises, and it could potentially help diminish soreness in multisport, recreational athletes as well.’
