WAFIC 2014 Presenter Profile:
Dom Gili, Aqua Fitness Presenter and Instructor, Swim School Owner

In the lead up to WAFIC 2014, where he’ll be divulging his wealth of water training secrets in the 1-day Aqua Fitness Workshop, Network eNews took a few minutes to catch up with Dom Gili.

Where do you live and work?
In Sydney’s Inner West and Eastern Suburbs.

What’s your main role in the fitness industry?
I’m an aqua fitness presenter, lecturer and instructor.

How did you get into this industry and how did you arrive at where you are today in your career?
I started as a swim teacher and then one day I helped a colleague out by covering an aqua class – and I haven’t looked back! I’ve been very fortunate to have been mentored by the incredible Kerri Parkinson over many years.

Describe your typical day
My day kicks off with two aqua classes, then it’s home to do some admin and website maintenance in the middle of the day (Dom is the creator of AquaFitnessOnline.com an online aqua fitness community and shop). In the afternoon I teach swimming.

What skills are needed in your role?
Communication, leadership, good knowledge of water principles and a good sense of humour!

What are the best and worst aspects of your job?
The best (among many great aspects) is that it keeps me fit and constantly surrounded with amazing people! The worst aspect – as any fitness professional will attest – is that it really requires adequate sleep. If I’m tired then I’m grumpy, which is not conducive to a good aqua class. On the plus side, though, my classes are always more challenging if I’m tired!

Taking the step from instructor to presenter, and I love it!

And your greatest highlight?
Being awarded Network’s Author of the Year in 2012!

What’s your main focus now and what are your goals for the future?
To share the good news about aqua fitness, and to continue presenting workshops across Australia and beyond.

Who has inspired you in your fitness industry career, and why?
Kerri Parkinson, Jennifer Schembri-Portelli and Marietta Mehanni. They are all so passionate about the power of working out in the water and their dedication and sheer hard work is very inspiring.

What are you most looking forward to about presenting at WAFIC 2014?
Meeting Perth Aqua Instructors and sharing the aqua love!

In your opinion, what’s next for Aqua Fitness?
Making aqua fitness SEXY and breaking into the 20-30-year-olds market.

What motto or words of wisdom sum up your fitness/life philosophy?
Do what you love and love what you do, because you get out of life what you put in.

And finally – who would be on your ultimate dinner party guest list, and why?
Ellen, Nelson Mandela, Arsene Wenger and Barack Obama – because the combination of great minds, great humour and great vision would make for an unforgettable evening!
