You’ve no doubt heard it pondered whether those who drop into your facility a couple of times a week for what looks like a fairly unchallenging workout are actually doing themselves much good. Well, new research from the UK suggests that they are.

Analysing the data of over 63,000 people (predominantly white males aged over 40) gathered in previous studies, researchers found that even those who reported undertaking only moderate intensity exercise for at least 150 minutes a week (or just over an hour’s worth of vigorous activity) had considerably lower mortality rates than those of inactive individuals.

The findings led the study authors to theorise ‘The weekend warrior and other physical activity patterns characterised by one or two sessions per week of moderate or vigorous intensity physical activity may be sufficient to reduce risks for all-cause, CVD (cardiovascular disease), and cancer mortality regardless of adherence to prevailing physical activity guidelines.’
