- The extent of the obesity problem in Australia
- How to assess overweight and obesity
- Factors affecting regulation of body weight
- The role of hormones in the body and where they are produced
- The main hormones affecting appetite and energy balance, and their actions
- Weight management set point theory
- The ‘famine response’ and its role in weight loss
- The lifestyle changes that can impact hormones to assist with weight control (including diet, physical activity, sleep and stress management)
- Insulin resistance and its relationship with weight management and metabolic health.

Upon completion, course participants will:
- Understand the extent of the overweight and obesity problem in Australia.
- Understand the health risks associated with excess body weight.
- Be able to explain what hormones are.
- Be able to identify the role hormones can play in weight/fat loss.
- Be aware of the main hormones which can influence fat loss.
- Be able to explain how hormones work together to influence appetite, metabolism and energy balance.
- Understand the concepts of the ‘famine reaction’ and the ‘fat brake’ and how these impact energy balance and weight control.
- Be aware of the key lifestyle changes (including diet, exercise, sleep and stress management) which can help with managing hormone levels to improve fat loss.
- Understand how insulin resistance can impact weight loss and health conditions such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Who is Kate Marsh?
Dr Kate Marsh is an Advanced Accredited Practicing Dietician (Adv APD) and Credentialed Diabetes Educator (CDE), working in private practice in Sydney. Kate has particular interest in the dietary management of diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), insulin resistance, pregnancy and preconception, and vegetarian diets. She is co-author of The Low GI Guide to Managing PCOS, The Low GI Vegetarian Cookbook, Low GI Gluten-Free Cooking and The Bump to Baby Diet. Kate is also a regular contributor to Diabetic Living Magazine and writes for a number of other publications including Healthy Food Guide and Health Naturally Magazine.
