The first mistake is treating 3×3 as a fixed percentage instead of a training plan. A percentage starts the choice. Bar speed, form, and reps in reserve finish it.

The second mistake is thinking low reps must mean maximum effort. Heavy, low-volume work can be useful below a true limit. Male academy soccer players have used two sets of four squats at 90% of 1RM in a high-intensity program, compared with three sets of eight at 80% in a moderate-intensity program. This shows that athletes can train heavy with fewer total reps. It doesn’t mean every lifter should copy that exact plan.

Another missed point: 3×3 can fail because the exercise is a poor fit. A lift that hurts, falls apart under load, or doesn’t suit the lifter won’t become useful just because it has three sets. Pick an exercise you can repeat through a steady range of motion.

Many lifters also count nine finished reps while ignoring what they looked like. A twisted final squat or bounced bench press isn’t equal to a controlled rep. The goal is nine reps that build the same movement skill.

It’s less complete for someone mainly trying to build muscle size. Heavy triples can help muscle growth, but nine reps don’t give much volume. That person should add suitable back-off or accessory work instead of turning every triple into a grind.

The method also takes patience. Small increases may look modest. Still, clean and repeatable work can produce a longer stretch of progress than constant maximum attempts.
